Getting started
The first steps to succes with your peer-to-peer fundraising site
When your site is ready, the task is to engage members, donors, corporate partners, volunteers, staff, good-will ambassadors, and other supporters to start fundraising for your important cause. Here are the first steps you should take.
# 1
Be patient
You might get the first fundraisers quickly, but remember to be patient. Think of your peer-to-platform as an option you provide (and market!) to your supporters. They might not neccessarily start a fundraiser when you ask them, but if they are aware and reminded about the possibility, they might start a fundraiser when they have the right occasion—for example, when they feel compelled to act in times of need, when they decide to design flowers as a sign of hope, when they embarge on a swim from Bornholm til Poland for peace, when they plan to run a marathon, or when the CEO of a corporate partner wishes donations for your organisation rather than wine for his anniversary. Remember: Successful fundraisers often involve people making their fundraiser personal and putting something at stake.
# 2
Start the first fundraisers yourself
To kick off the first fundraisers and get familiar with the system, create some fundraisers yourselves. Ask your colleagues, the CEO, board members, and leadership team to start a fundraiser for their next birthday when participating in a running event or hosting a yard sale. Here is a text for inspiration:
Dear [Name],
We are thrilled to launch our new peer-to-peer fundraising platform and would love your help to get it started. Could you consider creating a fundraiser for your next birthday, anniversary, or any other event? Your support will not only raise funds but also inspire others to join the cause. Thank you for your leadership and dedication!
# 3
Link from your website
Add a link from your website encouraging supporters to start their own fundraiser. Here is a text for inspiration:
Start your own fundraiser! Join us in making a difference by starting your own online fundraiser. Whether it’s for a birthday, a marathon, or any personal milestone, your support can have a huge impact. Click here to get started!
# 4
Highlight personal fundraisers in your newsletter
Tell volunteers, members, donors, and other supporters that they can now start their own fundraiser. Write a news update or include it as a regular feature. Here is a text for inspiration:
We are excited to announce that you can now start your own fundraiser for [organisation name]! Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just want to support our cause, creating a personal fundraiser is an easy and fantastic way to make a difference. Click here to get started!
# 5
Inspire supporters to make a good personal fundraiser
Make a page on your website with inspiration, tips and tricks to how to succeed with a fundraiser. You can easily find inspiration from other organisations, such as, for example, Oxfam Denmark and Red Barnet, or consultants, such as, for example, Christian Sophus.
# 6
Wish your donors a happy birthday!
What’s better than doing something good for others? Many people choose to start a personal fundraiser for a cause they support instead of wishing them wine or gifts on their birthday. Since you already have many of your donors’ CPR numbers and birth dates in your CRM, why not send them a greeting 14 days ahead of their birthday with a big congratulations and an invitation to start a birthday fundraiser for your cause? Here’s some inspiration for a message:
Dear [Donor’s Name],
Happy early birthday! This year, consider making your birthday extra special by creating a personal fundraiser for [organisation Name]. Instead of gifts, ask your friends and family to support a cause you care about. Click here to start your fundraiser and make a real difference!
# 7
Engage your goodwill ambassadors
Invite your goodwill ambassadors to start their own fundraiser. Their influence and reach can significantly boost your campaigns and attract more supporters to start their own fundraisers.
Remember that you can assign a unique MobilePay number to a fundraiser, which makes it easier to raise funds via social media by simplifying the donation process.
# 8
Highlight successful fundraisers on social media
To inspire others to start their own fundraisers, share successful ones on your social media. Whether it’s kids holding a yard sale for your cause or an enthusiastic supporter running across Denmark, sharing their story can motivate others to get involved.
# 9
Build campaigns for different purposes and occasions
Build targeted campaigns for various purposes and occasions, such as, for example, memorial fundraisers (especially relevant for disease-fighting organisations), emergency campaigns (especially relevant for international humanitarian organisations), birthday fundraisers, school fundraisers, or perhaps Christmas campaigns. You can customise images, texts, and mailflow for each campaign, thereby adjusting the fundraising experience for the donors.
# 10
Be creative: Events, concepts and corporate partnerships
This last step takes time and effort, but if you are creative and persistent, you can use your new peer-to-peer fundraising platform for many different purposes. For example a 100 km walking event, school fundraisers, or a 24 hour running event. Your options are limited only by your imagination.
